Resonant Enigma Too: Purpose

I'm making this into an "Art Blog"; more painting and drawing, less aimless wandering and whatnot. Not that there's anything wrong with that ...

In sink

~

Screen grab cropping of a photo I took too early one morning while waiting for the coffee to brew, of water splatters in the kitchen sink. I wanted to draw this at the time, but it got filed away and I forgot about it.

Now that it's out, I don't know ... It would be a challenge, no? Conte crayon or colored pencil ...

The shot itself is 1080 x 1920 pixels, you can click to see it bigger.

97_2021-6-30_3:20am Alarm

5x7" oil over acrylic on canvas panel

3:20 AM June 30, approximately 18 hours after my first Moderna jab, and about 20 hours  after my last dose of precious beautiful delicious coffee - to which I am powerfully  'addicted,' - (I mention both of these factors because, for all I know, either could be implicated) an ALARM went off in my mind, sounded like my malfunctioning doorbell, almost a  ding-dong but garbled, more of an electric hum with tones trying to bubble up through it,  like it's underwater, but this time it was LOUD and right through my  head; at the same  instant an image flashed, clear as if I was standing in front of it, but right in my eyes,  like the sound was right through my ears. One second or less and I was  wide  awake.

I tried to reproduce the image, but I'm not that good with watercolor & ink wash, so that one failed, and I had to get it right. The green was very insistently definite.  I finally got at least very close, had to resort to my trusty oil paint, and even that was on top of an attempt with acrylic.

I was in the process of weaning myself down from coffee, because of stomach problems, so I  could have been well into withdrawal, which can get weirder than most imagine. But it's  never been as psychedelic as this. It's been 2 weeks and nothing like that has happened again, and I've been even deeper into coffee withdrawal. The only new element in the mix is, um, the vaccine. Another week and a half I get jab #2...

What a time to be alive.

Liq_

16" x 20" acrylic and Liquin on canvas. Possibly finished, possibly underpainting for an action passage to come ...

I'm starting to wonder if what's left of my interest in painting is perhaps more spiritual than artistic, and may in fact have always been.

"I don’t really know whether art can exist without a certain degree of tranquillity or spiritual poise; without a certain amount of quiet you can have neither philosophy nor religion nor painting nor poetry. And as one of the specialties of modern life is to abolish this quiet, we are in danger of losing our arts together with the quiet of the soul that art demands." - Saul Bellow

3/1/2020, out the front door (and a rant, 3/3/20)

~

I just searched "the god of sleep" and first up was Hypnos, the Greek deity associated with sleep. I'm not up on Greek mythology, but if I could corner this numb-nuts I'd have a bone to pick.
To wit, why in god's green hell would you make sleep an ability? A physical fucking ability, that one can of course, therefore lose! The body gets old and wears out, loses its' edge when it comes to sleeping.
I can understand giving kids the lion's share, what with all their growing and jumping around like monkeys and what not (good times), but why not save a little for the old-and-worn-out? We get tired, too, Mr. Hypnos! Damn tired. Do you know what you're depriving of humanity, keeping our batteries so low that the brain doesn't even want to come online?
We know stuff. We could help out. But I can't at the moment imagine how exactly. Any clue as to why, Hypnos? God of...

...sleep... hypnos... hmm...

"We blew it."

~
A line from the movie; you'll see in a minute.
I took this old thing down off the wall at Mom's house, where it's been hanging, apparently, since 1975. An oil painting on Masonite I did for a gift; it's about 16"x14" and the subject was a "real" plastic bowling pin converted to a planter; that's a live flower -- of whatever kind, I forget -- and Mom's actual bowling ball behind.
The real treat, for me however, was what I found on the back...

It's my final -- gloriously unfinished -- high school art class project! Billy (Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) scootin' across the desert in Easy Rider. I remember there was a paperback book about the movie that had some stills in it and I was using one of those.
Then school let out and distractions abounded (many stories there; suffice here to say, I was kinda emulating these guys...), and it got set aside. Why I chopped it up for a flower picture...I was poor and out of canvas, I guess.

I've thought about that painting, that idea, many times over the years, especially since the internet, but I can't seem to find that same still shot. Maybe someday. But I never expected to find its remains on back of that masonite. I'm a little bit inspired by that, but then it's always exciting to run across old work having not seen it for years. Still...maybe someday...

That even looks a bit like Dennis Hopper, doesn't it? If you look closely you can even see some pencils lines where I sketched it in.

Edit 7/9/19: Cleaning out a closet at Mom's house just the other day I came across this, a preliminary sketch of the bowling ball painting:

After Moebius

~

An oil on canvas I did back in the 80s. It's on a 14x18" canvas but the image is only about 9.5"x15.75", the rest of the canvas covered in burnt umber. I don't recall why I did it that way.

It's taken from a panel in a comic strip drawn by Jean Giraud aka Moebius, in Heavy Metal Magazine. A sample of his work, I believe from the same story I used, is below.

If anybody recognizes the image I used above, and has access to sharing, I'd love to have a copy of the comic book image to compare. Google images didn't have it, just this one. The guys in the top pic are hunting these flying humanoids. For some "reason," probably sport. I remember how their luck went but I won't say. No spoilers here.

"It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it just is...and so are we. For a little while."

~

Is this real?
Or is this just a ride?

The world is like a ride
You think it's real - it's just a ride
And we can change it any time we want
It's only a choice - between fear and love

The ride goes up and down and round and round
It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored
Up and down and round and round
And it's very loud

Don't worry, don't be afraid
It's just a ride
And we can change it any time we want
It's only a choice between fear and love

Why are we here?
I think we're part of a bigger wisdom
That we won't ever understand
A higher order - call it what you want -
Know what I call it?  ~ *

20 Things Only ADHD (Highly Creative) People Would Understand

~
An article via Facebook via Go For Health via Life Hack.

"18. They have difficulty finishing projects.
The initial stage of the creative process is fast moving and charged with excitement. Often, they will abandon projects that are too familiar in order to experience the initial flow that comes at the beginning."  -- From the article, which is linked in the post title, or you can go HERE.

Most of it seems to fit me like a glove, with maybe an exception or two. I'm still not sure what ADHD has to do with it though, unless it's just that there are striking similarities.

Pretty interesting article, though. And fun, if you find yourself in there.
